Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a manual, physical therapy recognised by the NHS and British Medical Association, and looks at the patient as a whole, while maintaining a focus on the site of discomfort or presenting problem. Osteopaths use their hands to relieve pain and restrictions.  They aim to restore the structure and function of the body and encourage an optimal state.

Depending on the presentation and the patient's preferences, a variety of techniques may be used, which might include soft tissue techniques, mobilisation and articulation, or manipulation.  Treatment aims are:

  • providing, where possible an explanation for symptoms

  • reduction or improved management of pain

  • restoration of normal function and activities

  • prevention of recurrence

Additional treatment options include:
Cranial osteopathy, which is a subtle, refined treatment designed to encourage the release of stress and tension throughout the body. It is a very gentle method of treatment. For more information, please refer to the Sutherland Society.

Myofascial acupuncture, also called dry needling.  This can be effective for pain relief for a range of musculoskeletal pain, as well as strains and osteoarthritis. It is based on anatomy and works to inhibit the perception of pain. It can also be used to release trigger points - 'knots' in muscles.

Osteopathy can be appropriate for pain and discomfort from a variety of causes, from specific, acute onset to more long-term conditions, including:

Back pain Neck Pain Pain associated with Whiplash

Headaches Sacro-iliac joint pain Shoulder pain
